L’orgoglio di essere concittadino ed elettore di Barack

NEW YORK - Il 4 novembre 2008 sarà per me non solo uno spartiacque indelebile nella storia politica del nostro tempo, da raccontare ai miei figli con la commozione e l’attenzione di chi lo ha vissuto in prima persona. Sarà nella mia memoria il giorno in cui mai mi sono sentito più orgoglioso di essere cittadino americano.

These days the name of Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, fills the international politics pages of both the main American and not American newspapers and magazines. This female populist democrat, the first woman Prime Minister of an Islamic state, is raising one of the hottest debates in the contemporary public sphere, concerning her political challenge to current Pakistani national situation and her own capacities as a female leader of the  Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Debating over the Quran from a feminist perspective: a look into USA’s next hot-button item
What does the Quran really tell us about the relationship between men and women both in the public and in the private sphere? Is gender inequality truthfully one of the main features of the holy text of Muslims? Can we even push women's rights talk further and think of a female religious leadership within the Islamic traditions? These challenging questions have been raised in the last years by many Islamic women in the Unites States, mainly influential scholars who have expressed themselves in the academic as well as in the political career: Asma Barlas at Ithaca College in New York, Carolyn Moxley Rouse at Princeton University, Kecia Ali at Boston University. Now Amina Wadud and Ingrid Mattson are the two most visible figures in the States trying to rethink Islamic laws and their original historical context – the Hadiths - from a gender equality and freedom point of view.

Tolleranza zero per questa cultura vecchia e logora che calpesta i nostri diritti. E’ una questione di democrazia e per questo non dobbiamo stancarci di chiedere che ci venga riconosciuto il valore del merito e che ci vengano garantiti pari diritti ed eguali opportunità.
